It is no secret that for centuries, cats have been known for having a sixth sense of sorts and anyone who has ever owned a feline pet also feels that there is a lot more to them than what we see on the surface. Some even believe that cats possess some sort of psychic power and can foresee deaths.

The doctors, nurses, and patients at Steere House Nursing Center are no exception. They believe, and are very convinced, that Oscar the resident cat has accurately predicted the deaths of more than 100 patients since he has lived there.

Oscar is a 10-year-old tabby who has walked the hallways of Steere House since he was just a tiny kitten. He is known as being anti-social and distant until someone in the center has only days left to live, then and only then will he go looking for them throughout the facility, find them, and give them comfort and companionship during their final days.

The doctors and nurses at Steere House tell The Mirror that they are perplexed by Oscar’s uncanny ability to know which patient has only days left to live. The tabby has even proven medical staff wrong on several occasions when they see him hanging out with a patient that they think is far from death and they end up passing.

Oscar’s talents were first showcased in an article written by Dr. David Dosa in the New England Journal of Medicine back in 2007. The psychic cat’s powers have only gotten better and better since then.

In the article, Dr. Dosa described how Oscar only looks for patients who are days away from passing and residents who are terminally ill and who are more likely to die alone.

“His mere presence at the bedside is viewed by physicians and nursing home staff as an almost absolute indicator of impending death, allowing staff members to adequately notify families.”

“Lots of families have told me that having Oscar around is a great comfort for them and their loved ones. Whether it’s just cuddling up to people who are alone or keeping children busy, it’s really something that the families were grateful and thankful for. Oscar is a real miracle.”

Dr. Dosa’s scientific theory is that this supernatural feline is more than likely reacting to a scent or pheromone given off by patients who are close to death, but people who are familiar with and have been around cats for a long period of time feel that there is more to it than that. Dr. Dosa’s theory doesn’t explain how Oscar knows which patient doesn’t have many visitors and is most likely to pass away alone, for example.

Oscar was at one point close to death himself, back in November of 2013. He suffered a severe allergic reaction and his heart stopped beating, and was even declared clinically dead, for several seconds.

Luckily, he was taken into the intensive care unit and some fast thinking vets were able to bring him back to life. He was a patient at Steere House for a few months but as soon as he got better he resumed his normal duties- providing comfort to those in their time of need and always being on the lookout for those who are about to embark on their journey from this world to the next.
